Peridot is the gemstone associated with the month of August according to traditions dating back to antiquity, already present in various civilizations of the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
It belongs to the olivine family and is one of the few gemstones that display only one dominant color in nature. Variations relate to the intensity of the green, not a shift to other shades.
The color is determined by the presence of iron in the crystal structure. This characteristic makes peridot easily recognizable compared to other monthly birthstones.
